“Stockroom rumor has it that most of the allegations of sexual harassment filed against American Apparel founder Dov Charney were fabricated by the man himself. The plaintiffs in the public cases were in fact his girlfriends, or, those women employees he fucked, the chosen ones: they lived in apartments leased above his shops and dined on company credit cards, “brand representatives,” models——they were in on it. These girls were represented in suit by company lawyers (evidence). The legal battles, the rumor goes, were all show: manufactured scandals designed to lower public opinion of the company, and so its worth.”
Well this is certainly interesting....
Readers of this blog will note that I have shown no love for Dov Charney over the years. In fact, I take great delight in knocking him down whenever the occasion arises. I hate the man. I've never met him, I'll admit that but seeing page after page of accusations against one man.....that should do it.
So this was a piece that circulated in ADULT magazine (nope me neither) by Fiona Duncan in which she claims (as you'll read above) that the Dov Charney accusations were fabricated by the man himself in order to sell more garments. Erm......interesting theory right?
In case anyone is wondering how this could work, setting yourself up as a sexual predator is a risky move but, it has gained the brand a lot of attention. However, it is negative attention.
If what Duncan is saying is true, then it would be awful to think that the brand would treat such issues as a light flippant thing to make money from. It would also make life awkward for real cases of workplace sexual harrassment as it makes a mockery of how seriously these cases are (rightly) taken.
If false, then Duncan actually makes a mockery of the girls who are willing to come forward with their stories.
Either way, its fair to say that Charney, is a horrible man.
I hold firm against my ban on shopping there. In fact, I'm going to go one further. I'm not featuring anything about American Apparel on this site again. If Duncan's article is true then by featuring them then I am only furthering the storm and helping them to profit. At the very least, my blog will feel better without that man's face on it.
