Even though the U.S. sales numbers of his sophomore album Future History stand at only 64,000 copies sold since its September 2011 release, American recording artist Jason Derulo certainly knows how to heat up the radio airwaves with his catchy pop/R&B singles. Getting back into the recording studio after a terrible neck injury in January 2012, Derulo is paving his return with new single, "The Other Side", an upbeat track about when friends become something much more. Said to be written for current girlfriend, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, the song does a great job at reintroducing the American audience to the artist's charisma, powerful vocals and ability to craft a catchy dance number. Recently the song enjoyed the second biggest radio launch ever and the biggest add week of 2013 so far. Seems people are ready to welcome the "Whatcha Say" singer back.
"The Other Side" is about taking the next step in pursuing a relationship with the one who has had your attention for some time now, at least that is what I am taking away from the lyrics. "And I know, we ain't friends anymore, If we walk down this road, We'll be lovers for sure", Derulo sings, making ever girl's, and guy's, heart instantly melt. The artist has crafted another radio friendly hit that should have no problem catchy on with Top 40 music lovers. As a perfectly executed electronic/pop/R&B piece, it becomes another solid moment for Derulo. Production helps the finished product soar, but the real treat is hearing the seductive vocals of the artists hit all the highs and lows featured in the four minute single.
Derulo's catalog of songs has some extremely high moments, see "In My Head" and "Breathing", but also features its share of the bottom of the barrel, do not see "That's My Shhh". "The Other Side" will sit nicely alongside his best work to date. The performance sounds real, it should be if it is written about Sparks, the beats assist the artist instead of take anything away, and people will be able to dance the night away on any dance floor when it comes through the speakers. Released as the lead single from his upcoming third studio album, the new single is just the start he needs after experiencing lukewarm reception to his last effort and an unfortunate medical setback.
