| Closed Denim to Introduce Degradable Stretch Jeans With Coreva Fiber - Sourcing Journal Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:00 AM PST Closed Denim will mark a new milestone in its sustainable journey at the start of 2021. The German denim brand announced it will launch in February a capsule collection of completely degradable stretch denim. The men's and women's garments are made of organic cotton and the world's first biodegradable stretch yarn, Coreva, developed by its long-term Italian mill partner Candiani Denim, meaning the jeans and jackets can be naturally degraded in a compost without any microplastic residue or chemical emission. Closed joins a growing roster of brands to introduce Candiani's Coreva technology into their product line, including Denham, Stella McCartney, Hiut Denim Co. and more. Coreva stretch technology is achieved by wrapping organic cotton around a natural rubber core instead of synthetic and petrol-based elastomers that is typically used to make stretch denim. ![]() Closed Denim Additionally, Closed is substituting all other components of the jeans and jackets with natural alternatives that can decompose without leaving any harmful residue in the environment. Zippers and metal buttons are replaced by vegetable corozo buttons dyed with indigo pigments derived from plants. The studs and seams are sewn with Tencel thread, and a lasered logo replaces Closed's traditional leather back patch. Care labels are also made with degradable Vinatur fabric that consists of a blend of cellulosic fibers and fibers made of synthetic polymers. They are printed with natural pigments. The 5-piece collection will be produced by hand in Italy and will be part of Closed's "A Better Blue" eco-denim line that uses environmentally friendly dyeing and washing methods. Developed in partnership with Candiani and the Italian laundry Everest, "A Better Blue" products use 50 percent less water, 25 percent less energy and 65 percent less chemicals than traditional dye and wash methods. The brand plans to publish a new sustainability report in early 2021. |
