"Stupid Love" took way too much heat.
The exuberant lead Chromatica single earned Lady Gaga an impressive 12th top five hit. She hopes to add to that chart dominance by now linking up with pop starlet Ariana Grande for a cleansing duet, ahead of the parent album's May 29 release date.
Rumored and teased for months, the new "Rain On Me" bottles up the recent trials and tribulations faced by both artists, shakes it all up in house beats, and unleashes the pain as an anthem of perseverance and mental recovery. Fully rejuvenated, both Gaga and Grande now take to the dancefloor to admit, while everything in life isn't perfect, at least they're still here.
Produced by BURNS & BloodPop, the 90s-inspired collaboration thrusts both female pop stars into uncharted sonic territory. Wrapped in disco and house influence, fingersnaps and thunderous percussion, Gaga remains troubled by darkness but ultimately finds comfort in knowing that everything will get better. Ariana too, comes to understand that it's better to be honest about stress and anxiety, instead of allowing the hurt to keep you down. "It's coming down on me, water like misery, it's coming down on me, I'm ready, rain on me," Gaga belts just before the defiant chorus bursts through.
"Rain On Me" is a moment of healing following immense heartache and doubt. While Gaga's creative decisions have been questioned and criticized since her meteoric rise, Grande was forced to remain strong for her fans following a shooting at her Manchester concert three years ago. Any of those events would have frazzled many. Thankfully, these artists pushed forward.
While Grande still suffers from a lack of enunciation, and Gaga's songwriting on the first verse is a bit choppy, the message and vocal chemistry between the artists on "Rain On Me" overshadow the slight flaws. The emphasis on creating a joyous, sci-fi atmosphere and encouraging listeners to always be the strongest versions of themselves carries immense, much-appreciated weight.
When it rains, it usually pours. Luckily, our psychedelic trip to Chromatica is only one week away! What quarantine?!
